Very packed near-week up at the Mt. Washington hillclimb. Many stories to be told. Somewhere in the middle of everything was getting buzzed by a helicopter at speed at 5,000 feet at eye level.

Who in their right mind thought that scheduling both Pikes Peak and Mt. Washington on the same week/weekend was a good idea? I still don't get the reasoning behind that, but oh well.

We were just there on Wednesday...attempted to drive up but they had it closed at the halfway point due to rain, soft gravel and the pea-soup-thick cloud cover. We paid and drove it anyway because, living in Ohio, it might be a while before we get back. We did see numerous rally cars headed up there on our drive back through NH and VT on Thursday.
I think someone was learning the road while we were there...we saw the same Subaru pass us on the way up (we'd pulled off for a picture), passed on his way down while we were still going up, then passed him going back up again as we were on our way down.

The copter (Bell Jet Ranger I believe) was hired by Rally America to film the Rally entrants for NBC Sports Network. They filmed the bottom half in the morning and the top in the afternoon because they had to swap the camera over to the other side.
I was working communications at the finish line (red MR2). It was an intense weekend between the cars, copter and we had a sail plane fly over us as well. Beautiful, "un" Mount Washington like weather unlike 2011 when visibility was 50 to 100 feet for the last mile+. Actually amazing that Higgins did so well then - at the finish he came blasting through the finish at maybe 80mph - I couldn't even make out the flagger at the line 100' away.
This is a daunting road at what we would consider brisk speeds (25-40 mph) - at race speeds I'm sure much underwear was soiled.
